£3.4m trial examines earlier treatment to preserve hearing

Northern Care Alliance secured more than £3.4 million for a trial comparing early targeted radiotherapy with monitoring for vestibular schwannoma. The study will assess hearing preservation and patient-focused outcomes.

Issued by Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust, Greater Manchester ·

The national study will recruit more than 200 people through up to 16 specialist units. Participants will receive early stereotactic radiosurgery or usual monitoring, with hearing outcomes compared over four years. Vestibular schwannomas are non-cancerous tumours affecting the nerve between the ear and brain. Researchers will use a digits-in-noise hearing test that can be completed at home on a laptop or tablet. Patients helped shape the outcomes. The release reports research funding and plans, not proof that earlier treatment works better.
