GP trial tests blood screening for abdominal cancers

A trial involving more than 20,000 NHS patients will assess blood tests for abdominal cancers at at least 200 English GP practices. Researchers will evaluate earlier detection and urgent referral decisions.

Issued by Department of Health and Social Care, England ·

STRIDE-RCT may invite patients aged 45 or older consulting about symptoms such as persistent bloating or abdominal discomfort. The tests examine biological signals to help doctors decide who needs investigation; a positive result is not itself a cancer diagnosis. The University of Birmingham developed the trial, which evaluates testing alongside clinical judgement before decisions about wider use. Government support of up to £8.49 million comes through the Office for Life Sciences and NIHR. The trial will include varied communities across England.
