Lords committee calls for lifelong numeracy support

The House of Lords Numeracy for Life Committee recommends action across childhood, education, employment and retirement. It calls for specialist teaching, stronger GCSE resit provision and signposting to adult learning.

Issued by House of Lords Numeracy for Life Committee, Westminster ·

The committee’s Making it Count report argues that numeracy affects employment, household finances, health and participation in society. It highlights weak outcomes in repeated GCSE maths resits and recommends adequate funding and specialist teaching capacity. For adults, it proposes routine signposting to learning through services such as jobcentres, primary care, housing and probation. The report also suggests better early-years guidance, support for older people and a National Year of Numeracy. These are committee recommendations, not measures already adopted by the government.
