New Ukrainian GCSE planned for first teaching in September 2028

A Ukrainian GCSE is being developed for pupils in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. First teaching is expected in September 2028 and first assessments in 2029.

Issued by Department for Education, United Kingdom ·

The Department for Education has announced plans for a Ukrainian GCSE open to all pupils in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It is intended to support language learning and cultural connections, including for Ukrainian young people living in the UK.

First teaching is expected from September 2028, with initial assessments in 2029. This is therefore a future qualification, not an examination already available this school year.

AQA will develop the qualification with language and subject experts. It is expected to assess listening, speaking, reading and writing, alongside cultural and historical context. The announcement connects the initiative with the UK-Ukraine 100-Year Partnership and a schools partnership involving more than 300 schools across both countries.
