British-built Titania satellite reaches orbit
The Ministry of Defence reports that Titania is in orbit under the ISTARI programme. A ground-sensor trial will monitor space activity from sites in the UK, Australia and Cyprus.
Issued by Ministry of Defence, United Kingdom ·
The Ministry of Defence has reported the successful launch of Titania, intended to improve observation of activity on Earth. The launch took place in the month before the announcement, not on its publication date.
UK Space Command will operate the approximately 100-kilogram satellite under ISTARI. The department says it was designed and built in Hampshire by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory and BAE Systems under a £9.5 million contract.
The announcement also introduces Project Inaros, a trial of ground-based sensors in the UK, Australia and Cyprus. The sensors detect changes in light and could help identify unusual activity near satellites. Both projects sit within the department’s announced investment in space capabilities.
